Ex 7.2.1 - Basic Browsing

KNOWLEDGE

FIRST STEPS WITH THE WEB BROWSER

Open (and close) a Web browsing application
The two most popular Web browsing applications are Microsoft Internet Explorer and NetScape Navigator.  We recommend using Internet Explorer as it is part of the total Microsoft Office family of applications and the look, feel and operation of Explorer is similar to other Office applications such as Word.  Internet Explorer can be opened from the Windows desktop by either clicking the Internet Explorer button on the task bar at the bottom of the screen or by double-clicking the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop itself.

Change the Web browser Home Page/Start page
When Internet Explorer is first opened, and connected to the Internet, the first page to open is referred to as the Home Page.  This is often the Home Page of the company who provides you with Internet access, such as AOL or Wanadoo. If you do not wish to be directed to that company's Home Page every time you start the browser you can change it by selecting Tools, Internet Options, and then choosing the General tab.  You can then enter a new Home Page address in the box provided.

Display a Web page in a new window
Every time you click on a hyperlink a new web page will open and replace the current page.

Stop a Web page from downloading
Sometimes when you click to open a new web page you find that you have to wait quite a long time before it displays in full.  Sometimes the wait becomes excessive and you wish you had not requested that link.  You can stop the page displaying and return to the last page or some other page by clicking the Stop button on the toolbar.

Refresh a Web page
Sometime a web page does not display correctly.  Part of it is missing or undistinguishable.  To view the same page again click the Refresh button on the toolbar.

Use available Help functions
Internet Explorer, like other Microsoft Applications, has a range of Help options listed on the Help menu.  To open the Help menu you will need to hold down the Alt key and press the H key first.  These include:
  • Contents and Index
  • Tip of the Day
  • Online Support
  • Send Feedback

ACCESSING WEB PAGES

Understanding and using web based Forms is a major consideration for the new user to the Internet.  Shown below is a simple example of a web based form.  It consists of:
  • Labels (First name, Surname, etc.),
  • Text Boxes (the boxes next to each label),
  • and Command Buttons (Submit and Reset) which are clicked when you are happy with the details entered on the form.

The form is way of getting the user to enter information to return to the company whose web site is being accessed.  It could be so that the company can send out further information to the customer or simply to track visitors to the site.

To enter details on the form use the mouse to click in the text box next to the label "First name".  Type in your name.  To access the other text boxes use the Tab key on the keyboard or alternatively use the mouse.  Once you are happy that the details you have entered are correct click the Submit button to send the details to the web site manager.

N.B. In this example this has been disabled.

     First name Surname

     Address

     Town

     County

     Post Code
