| An Intranet is a network of computers that
physically exists within a given organisation
where information can be exchanged using Internet technology (TCP/IP
protocols).
TCP/IP protocols (as
used on the Internet) are used to create a network of computers which are
accessible only by the organisation's employees. An intranet's Web
site looks and acts just like any other Web site. However, the
intranet will have a firewall (specialist software/hardware) connected to
it in order to prevent unauthorised access.
Like the Internet
itself, intranets are used to share information. Secure intranets
are much less expensive to build and manage than private networks based on
proprietary protocols and as such are used extensively by organisations.
