| SEARCHING ON THE INTERNET - SEARCH ENGINES
A
search engine is a specialist web site that allows you to search the
Internet
thus locating a list of web pages/sites of interest to you. You don’t in
fact search the whole Web as that is too vast. What you do is search
through the search engines database of web pages – this is a summary of
what are on the pages themselves. The search engine compiles this
database by working through the Web and recording what is there.
Different search engines generate their databases in different ways and
thus searching with different engines will give different results.
Searching the Web through a search engine makes your search a lot quicker
as you are only searching a relatively small database compared to the
whole Web. Search engines are best used if you're looking for web sites
or general information rather than looking for a friend's e-mail address.
Some well know search engines
include:
www.google.co.uk
www.ask.co.uk
www.yahoo.co.uk
www.altavista.co.uk
Using a search engine is
reasonably straight forward in that you type a word or string of words
into the Search box and then press Enter.
