Ex 2.2.4 - Copy, Move

KNOWLEDGE

COPY, MOVE

Microsoft Windows allows you to duplicate or move files and folders either one at a time, or in groups, from any storage device accessible.  The duplication/moving operation is best undertaken using either Windows Explorer or My Computer but it is also sometimes possible to do whilst using other applications.  The duplication/moving operation of files and folders is much the same as the duplication or moving of text is in a Word Processor.  The required file(s)/folder(s) are highlighted.  They are then Cut or Copied to the Windows Clipboard and then Pasted to the required new location.  This can be done using:
  • the Cut/Copy/Paste commands on the Edit menu
  • the Cut/Copy/Paste buttons on the toolbar
  • or by selecting the appropriate command on the Files and Folder Tasks list as shown in the screen shot below

BACKUP

It is very common to save a large number of files on one disc.  In fact you will probably fit several months work on your first floppy disc.  Take care however because it is very each also to lose all of this work.  This could be because:
  • of a virus on the disc
  • you have accidentally deleted all the files
  • you have dropped the disc and it no longer works
  • or you left it in college or on the bus

However you lose your work is irrelevant.  What you MUST MUST MUST do is ensure that you have a copy, or backup, of ALL the important files.  If you have a backup and you lose your main disc, you have in effect lost nothing (except a 20p disc).  The files on the disc are what are important.  You will have spent hours, days or even weeks working on them.  By simply copying all of your files onto either a backup floppy disc or the hard disc of your computer at home on a regular basis you will be able to sleep at night.  In business you would backup not just data files but the whole system to a magnetic tape.
